Finalists for the 19th annual Lambda Literary Awards were announced on March
1 by the Lambda Literary Foundation. These awards, which honor books published
during 2006, are presented in 25 categories. Readings by the finalists will
take place in San Francisco on April 12 and in New York on April 17 (check
www.lambdaliterary.org for additional readings). Winners will be announced on Thursday,
May 31, at the Lambda Literary Awards Ceremony in New York City.
The Lambda Literary Foundation received a record number of nominations this
year. LLF Executive Director Charles Flowers said that in all, 147 publishers
nominated 381 titles for awards in 25 categories. "This is extraordinary,"
he observed, "that this number of books with LGBTQ content were published
in a given year by such a large number of publishers." Under new guidelines
this year, a book could be nominated only by its author or by its publisher.
The complete list of nominees, now available on the
LLF website,
is a great resource, showing many - if not most - of the LGBTQ books published
during 2006. The finalists in each category are listed below.
